Content curation vs content creation

They sound like the same thing, right? While they sound the same, curation and creation are completely different when it comes to content.

Content Curation

Content curation is when someone outside of the brand has created content about your brand. Examples of this include:

  • Influencer wearing or using products and posting about it
  • Fan art / designs
  • Blogs/online journals about your brand, service, or product
  • Youtube videos, social media posts, and more!

Essentially, content curation is something not designed by the company or brand. It is someone else making content about the brand, product or service. In turn, the brand is able to comment on the post, share the content, and more. Specifically in regards to websites, an example would be someone linking the website in a social media post, story, or sending it out to people. Content curation adds value to a company and their website as content is being shared by individuals outside of the brand itself.

Content Creation

On the other side of other people creating content about your brand, content creation is when the brand makes something itself. This content is exclusively created for your brand, and made by somebody within the company or hired. It wasn't made for fun or by someone outside of the company. Examples of this include:

  • Instagram post promoting a product
  • Linking your website in a social media story
  • Tik Tok video regarding your brand or service

Overall, content creation is something made by the company itself, not outside influencers, fans, or others!
